Katakana Lesson 4: Compounds
|
Here's the first video about compounds, but there's one more!
|
|
Here's the last Katakana video! With this, you should know how to handle any Katakana you come across. |
Katakana Compounds
There are numerous compounds in Katakana that are the same as Hiragana.
For example, the small ッ operates the same way in both writing systems.
These are made up words, but it illustrates the point:
シャック vs. シャク
Shyakku Shyaku
However, there are some compounds in Katakana that do NOT exist in Hiragana.

Vowel Elongation!
In Katakana, some vowels are elongated using a dash. It is horizontal when writing horizontally, and it is vertical when writing vertically. ローグ ソーサラー ファイター Ro-gu So-SaRa- FaITa- Rogue Sorcerer Fighter |
Weird Dots
Words in Katakana will occasionally have weird dots in the middle of them. This is because it is a single noun that has more than one borrowed word in it. Your name likely uses these. エバン・ロジャーズ ヒット・ポイント EBaN RoJya-Zu HiTto PoINTo Evan Rogers Hit Point |
Small "A" Row Characters
Many borrowed words have twists of the tongue and shapes of the mouth that the Hiragana writing system can't handle. In Katakana, the "A" row can be made tiny and put after a character to change the vowel sound. ヴァンバイア ウィル・オ・ウィスプ VaNPaIA UiRu O UiSuPu Vampire Will 'o' Wisp |

Every single word in this section will be a real word that is game related! Try to guess what they mean. Some are much more difficult than others.
