New Grammar
- Adverbs
- Most adverbs in Japanese stem from adjectives. To turn an adjective into an adverb, just follow this pattern:
- い-Adjectives: put the adjective in front of the verb and change the last い into a く
- な-Adjectives: put the adjective in front of the verb and change the last な into a に
- Examples: はやく あるきます: Walk fast; しずか に いきます : Go quietly.
- Becoming something
- If X becomes a Y then we follow the following pattern (See examples below):
- If Y is an Adjective: Place it before the verb なります and make Y an adverb.
- If Y is a noun: Place Y before the verb なります and put に between the two.
- Examples: バード に なりました: I became a bard; あつく なりました: It became hot; へた に なりました: I became unskilled
- Length of Time: Hours
- To designate a certain length of hours passing, or to explain that something takes a certain number of hours, then we use counter/particle かん after the じ.
- Examples: くじかん= 9 hours; にじゅうじかん=20 hours.
- “Also”, “As Well”, “All of them”, “All encompassingly” - も
- Noun + も
- A noun followed by も signifies “Also”, or “As well”.
- も replaces は and/or を, but is added AFTER other particles.
- Question Word + も
- When も follows a question word like なに, いつ, どこ,or だれ, it means “every-of-the-give-unit”. This is how we form words like “everyone” or “every where” or “always” or “everything”.
- To use “What”, use なに.
- Counter + も
- When も follows after a number-related word, it means “as much as [this many things]".
- Examples: わたし も いきます, “I will also go” ; いつ も します, “I always do (this)” ; なん じかん も かかりました, “It took a whole lot of time”; がいこつ は にじゅう にん も いました: “There were as many as 20 skeletons”.
- Only - だけ
- The particle だけ is used mostly after nouns, but can also follow adjectives and verbs.
- It means “only [the thing preceding it]”.
- だけ usually replaces the 'usual' particle, except for で and と and when used in yet-to-be-introduced grammar patterns.
