New Grammar
Particle で - "By means of"
General Numbers
- This particle is very versatile: it explains by what tool you perform a verb and where you perform an action verb.
- Use the particle で after the location the action took place at, and after any tool that was used to perform a verb.
General Numbers
- We've encountered numerous numbers in Japanese and now we're going to learn the basic numbers.
1: いち
2: に 3: さん 4: よん 4: し 5: ご |
6: ろく
7:なな 7: しち 8: はち 9: きゅう 10: じゅう |

To 100, AND BEYOND!
Counting to 19 is easy: the pattern is "10 + a number". For example:
Counting to 100 is also easy: The pattern is "the ten's place + 10 + the one's place"
(use よん じゅう for 40 and なな じゅう for 70)
The word for 100 is ひゃく. Knowing this, and the pattern above, you can count to 999!
Counting to 19 is easy: the pattern is "10 + a number". For example:
- 11 = 10+1 = じゅう いち 14 = 10+4 = じゅう よん 16 =10+6 = じゅう ろく 19 = 10+9 = じゅう きゅう
Counting to 100 is also easy: The pattern is "the ten's place + 10 + the one's place"
(use よん じゅう for 40 and なな じゅう for 70)
- 20 = 2 x 10 = に じゅう 34 = 3x10+4 = さん じゅう よん 77 = 7x10+7 = なな じゅう なな 94 = 9x10+4 = きゅう じゅう よん
The word for 100 is ひゃく. Knowing this, and the pattern above, you can count to 999!
Counters
- Counters don't really exist in English, so it's not really possible to compare them to anything in English.
- A counter is a word that is used after a number. The word designates "what kind of object" is being counted.
- For Example there are counters that mean the following classifications: Bound paper, long cylinders, small thing, big machines, small animal, bird, floors in a building, and many many many many more.
- The counter introduced in this lesson is めんたい、which is a VERY limited counter. It is used to count "tetrahedrally shaped objects", such as the dice used in fantasy games. Use the number of sides of the die before the counter めんたい to say "a X-sided die". See examples below.

Practice
(1) Table Talk: The following weapons do the following damage. Explain what to roll to deal the damage in Japanese. For those unfamiliar with these gaming terms: The number before “d” is the number of dice you roll, and the number after it tells how many sides the die has.
For example: “2d4” means “2 dice with 4 sides”, or “two 4-sided dice) which is a range of 2-8. “6d8” means “roll six 8-sided dice”, a range of 6-48.
For example: “2d4” means “2 dice with 4 sides”, or “two 4-sided dice) which is a range of 2-8. “6d8” means “roll six 8-sided dice”, a range of 6-48.
- けん: 1d6
- つちほこ: 1d8

(2) Below is a list of people, things and verbs. In Japanese, tell me that “the first thing” used “the second thing” to do “the verb.” Make the sentences past tense (After all, you're telling a story!)
For example: 1, 2, 3 : 1 が 2 で 3 ました。
For example: 1, 2, 3 : 1 が 2 で 3 ました。
