New Grammar
- Double が sentences... what? Lady GaGa?
- When you want to say that you like or dislike something, or that you want to do something, you’ll find sentences with a が instead of an を.
- It’ll be a bit confusing, but try to remember that すき、きらい、and all of the ~たい forms are ADJECTIVES, not VERBS.
- With the ~たい words:
- Use が after the object if you want to emphasize the ~たい’s adjective’s nature
- “I have a desire to eat breakfast”
- Use を after the object if you want to emphasize the ~たい’s verb nature.
- “I want to eat eat breakfast”
- The difference is often negligible.
- While these verbs and situations are "double が verbs" (in some books they are referred to as "affective verbs" or "affective predicates"), the main subject ("the primary affect") usually uses a は particle.
- Verb Stem + たい + です -- “Want to Do”
- To inform someone that you want to do something, you must use the Verb Stem (lesson 14) and add たい です.
- Remember forever and always that these are い-Adjectives and not verbs. Thus, to say that you DON’T want to do something, you must negate たい by using くない です
- "But, Evan, do I need the です at the end? Isn't it a verb?" -- THE たい form is an い-adjective!! Use です, at least for now!!
- この、その、あの、どの
- These are used before a noun. They inform the listener as to which item you’re talking about. This sword? That sword? That sword over there? Which sword?
- More usage of the particle に
- The particle に has been used as “to a location”, “at a time”, and “at a target”.
- Here, we introduce the usage of に in reference to other people.
- When meeting someone, we’ve used と after the person you meet. You can also use に.
- と emphasizes a mutual meeting that was possibly pre-planned
- に encourages the idea of simply meeting someone, or an accidental meeting.
- When receiving something from someone, the giver can either receive から or に.
- This can be VERY confusing because you’ve learned に to mean a target, yet it is the giver that uses the に particle.
- The usage of に emphasizes the original location of the object, while から emphasizes the actual transfer. The two are largely interchangeable without any significant change in meaning.

Practice
(1) Wants, Reasons and Not Wants.
(A) Given the character class, make 4 complete sentences for items you might want.
Example: “ローグ” =>
まほう の たんけん が ほしい です。 きんか が ほしい です。 あたらしい よろい が ほしい です。ダイス が ほしい です。
(B) Using what you wrote in (A), choose ONE item in EACH category and explain that “I wanted it. But...”
Example: まほう の たんけん が ほしかった です。でも、ウィザード は ぜんぜん いません。
(C) Using what you wrote in (A), choose ONE item in EACH category and explain that “Because....., I don’t want it.”
Example: おもい から あたらしい よろい が ほしくない です。

(2) Mix and Mash: Make 20 “I want to do” (~たい です)sentences using the following 10 subjects, objects/places, adjective/adverbs and verbs.
Subjects
わたし あなた だんせい じょせい ローグ コボルド がいこつ クレリック おうさま うし |
Objects / Places
ネズミ おの じゅもん てら じんじゃ はやし かわ あさごはん だれ ソーサラー |
Adjective / Adverb
きれい(な) おいしい おもい かるい さむい ふるい ねむい こわい とくべつ(な) きょだい(な) |
Verb
かけます たべます やすみます たおします もらいます かいます いきます いのります みます とります |
(3) Lists are easy! Make a character, and tell me 5 things that your character likes, and 5 things s/he doesn’t like.
Example:
わたし の キャラクター は バード です。
まほう が すき です。こわい がいこつ が きらい です。
きれい な じょせい が すき です。おうさま が きらい です。
…. but do 5 each, instead of 2.. (I don’t want to steal all your ideas. I am a very nice person, no?)
