New Grammar
- い-Adjective Conjugations (Past Tense, Negative, and Negative Past Tense)
- In English, we’re used to verbs being past tense - not our adjectives. In Japanese, い-adjectives have tenses.
- To negate an い-adjective, change the last い into くない. **** Notice that this pattern still ends in い -- It is still an い-Adjective****
- To make an adjective past tense, change the last い into かった.
- Example: Let's Conjugate たかい
たかい
|
Current / Habitual / Future Tense
|
Past Tense
|
Positive
|
たかい です
"[It] Is expensive" |
たかかった です
"[It] was expensive" |
Negative

たかくない です
"[It] is not expensive" |
たかくなかった です
"[It] was not expensive" |
Hourly Time - じ
- To let people know what time it is, or what time an event happens, we use the counter じ after a “number in general” (See below for examples).
- For 4, you must use よ じ -- not よん じ or し じ.
- “What time” is "なん じ."
- This does not “count” the number of hours, it tells you the time. We will learn how to tell how many hours an action takes in the next lesson.
- Add the particle に after じ to inform the listener/reader that the sentence happened at that time.
From, Because, and Until
- から is used for two chief purposes: “Because” and “From”. You can see a connection in meaning, I hope.
- After a time (without に), から informs us that the action happens FROM that time.
- After a sentence, the particle から designates the previous sentence as a cause. (“Because of the sentence”)
- If an an い-adjective is at the end of the sentence before から you don’t need です. (See * in "Examples")
- まで is used to designate the extent of something.
- ろく じ まで “Until 6 o’clock”
- Mordor まで “until we reach Mordor”
Examples
- じゅう じ まで あるきます。 We will walk until 10.
- いぬ が ろく じ に なきました から わたし が おきました。 The dog barked at 6 so I woke up.
